She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her Doctorate of Dental Surgery and graduated May 2010.

She also designed and implemented a dental community awareness program for school aged children while attending NC State University called Pack Smiles. The program combined her love for NCSU, dentistry and children and allows those NC State Pre-Health Club Members interested in dentistry to get involved in their community by conducting a small educational presentation to school aged children which spreads the importance of oral health while promoting her Alma Mater, NCSU. The program has grown tremendously since 2005 when Dr. Karner established it.

Dr. Karner while attending UNC Dental School was actively involved in the following organizations: American Student Dental Association, American Association of Women Dentists, Delta Sigma Delta, and the Student Professionalism and Ethics Club.

On her free time, Dr. Karner enjoys cooking and baking, theatre, golf, movies, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. Her husband, Kevin and their dog, Ty, and cat, Chloe, are very excited to be joining “The City of Pleasant Living” this summer.

LEED REGISTERED BUILDING

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is managed by the US Green Building Council. The LEED certification system rates how well a building performs in several categories including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and their environmental impact.

Our facility is currently a LEED registered project and will complete certification once the building is complete. When you visit, please ask any of us what it is that makes us green. It began from site selection, carried through the entire building project, and aspects are visible now from an all concrete parking lot to reduce the heat island effect to an extremely efficient HVAC system and ample natural lighting. We have loved learning what it is to be LEED and green and would love to share it with you.

The basic premise of the design was to provide each and every operatory with a full view of an exterior natural garden to provide the most pleasant experience for the patients possible. This also contributes to LEED certification through daylight and views. The operatories arch around the garden and face north to prevent glare. Energy conservation will be achieved through very highly efficient HVAC systems and an enhanced thermal envelope and glass.

Water will be conserved by low flow fixtures inside and native landscaping outside which requires no irrigation. Rain water will be captured in rain garden pools. Preferred parking for alternative energy vehicles and facilities for bikers will be provided. Waste management and indoor air quality plans will be implemented during construction of the building. An educational brochure on LEED will be provided for patients and visitors when the building is completed. These are just a few of the design elements incorporated to minimize the environmental impact of this building.
